Set and maintain an organisational goal

For licensed Collaborators with permission for this task. Check the selected organisation; feature availability and record access still apply.

What you will achieve

Record an outcome the organisation wants to achieve, connect contributing work and review progress without confusing activity with results.

Before you start

Agree the outcome, target date, responsible owner and the evidence that would show success. Check existing goals and any parent goal so the new record has a clear place.

Create the goal

  1. Open Goals and choose Create Goal.
  2. Enter a specific Title and Description. Explain the desired change and why it matters.
  3. Select the type, category, priority and current status from the available values.
  4. Set the target date and create the record.
  5. Open Story and read it as someone who did not write it. Clarify vague phrases such as “improve performance” by recording the intended outcome and evidence.

Connect work and people

Use Relationships to inspect or maintain the parent/child and project connections offered for the goal. Check that each linked project contributes to the outcome rather than merely sharing a topic.

Review Work, Contributors and Benefits. Here “Contributors” is a goal tab describing contribution; it is not a separate platform account type. Licensed users are Collaborators.

Record ownership and contribution through the goal's available controls and agree responsibilities with the people involved. A relationship in the system is not confirmation that someone accepted the work.

Review progress

Open Health and read the explanation behind each measure. Some values derive from linked work or manual check-ins. A Pending metric is not a zero score or a completed assessment; the reviewed page explicitly leaves Key Results attainment pending.

Use Reviews to schedule and complete a supported review with evidence and follow-up. Revisit the goal's status and date when the evidence or organisational priorities change.

Check it worked

Reload the goal, follow a linked project and check the contribution makes sense. Confirm that the target date, story and review conclusion agree. Distinguish delivery progress from evidence that the intended benefit has occurred.

If something goes wrong

Problem Next action
Progress is unexpected Inspect linked work and the measure's stated calculation
A metric is pending Do not invent a score; use an explicit manual review of the evidence
A goal is too broad Agree clearer boundaries or meaningful child goals
The goal is no longer relevant Record the decision and update its status without erasing the history

Human judgement matters

Completing contributing projects does not automatically establish benefit realisation. Keep the outcome evidence visible.

What next?

For the wider context, see Manage projects, goals, assets and knowledge.

Review goals with their owners at an agreed cadence and adjust the connected work when priorities change.

Ask your Organisation Administrator about access or the task owner about the content. For a platform error, include this guide reference, the affected page and a sanitised message, not confidential evidence or session details.
